Dear Friends of Fabric,
Thank you to the members of the Friendship Quilters of Linthicum and Eternal Quilters Guilds. We enjoyed vending at the quilt show last weekend and seeing old friends and meeting lots of new ones. I hope you will visit us at Capital Quilts sometime soon!
The Book Cover Challenge quilts are beginning to arrive in my office, and they look wonderful. Be sure to bring us your entry form along with your quilt. The quilts will hang in the Gallery during Quilters’ Quest and be open to voting.
The September Sit-N-Sew is tomorrow night, Friday, the 27th. Bring your own project and supplies and some food to share with new and old friends. We’ll provide the beverages. The fun begins at 5. FREE
Rod’s Sharpening Service will be here on Wednesday, October 2 for their last visit of the year. Wrap up your scissors, knives, and small garden tools (less than 12”) in a box or towel, close it securely so nobody gets poked or cut, and include your name, address, phone number, and payment (check or cash) in the package. Beauty salon shears are $20; everything else is $7 each. Bring your tools to the shop not later than Tuesday, October 1. Pick them up again on October 2 after 2pm.
Quilters’ Quest is almost upon us! Just two weeks to go. Your Passport Package will be available on www.quiltersquest.org in the next few days. All the information you need to have a great trip to all the shops is in there. If you are riding on one of the shops’ buses, you do not need to download this Package unless you want the “Library Card” to get it stamped in each shop as a memento of your trip. We will take care of everything else for you.
There is still room on our Quilters’ Quest Bus for a two-day tour of all 10 shops on Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15. Monday is Columbus Day; perhaps you have the day off. What better way to spend it than enjoying quilt shops? We’ll feed you lunch both days, have coffee and donuts in the morning, and send along a “bus mom” to take care of the details and make sure you have a wonderful time. At the end of the two days, you will receive a Discount Card for 15% off your purchases at all 10 of the participating shops during the next year and a tote bag with some goodies inside. Hop on the bus and leave the driving to us!
Do you know anyone who would like to learn how to sew? If you do, kindly let them know that we are having a Learn to Sew class this Saturday, September 28, from 1-4. The minimum age is 13. Students will learn how to thread and use their sewing machine and practice sewing a straight line and a curved line. They will make a pillowcase to take home with them. Help get someone started on his or her own sewing adventure!

CLASSES
Register for classes online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598. Please register early; we need at least 3 people to make a class happen. If the class is cancelled by Capital quilts, you will get a refund of the class fee. If you let us know you can’t make it at least 8 days before the class, you will get a store credit of the class fee. Cancellations 7 or fewer days before the class are not refundable, but you can try to find someone to take your place. If there is a waiting list, we’ll try to help with that. The Supply List for each class may be found on our website at the lower left-hand corner of the class page. You may have to scroll down to find it.
Betsy Kulamer is teaching one of my favorite blocks, Cleopatra’s Fan, on Sunday, September 29, 1-4. You can make beautiful quilts using this block; just ask Betsy, who made a wedding gift using it. Make a table runner or small wall hanging in class.
The Scrap Petal Garden quilt has proven to be one of our most popular classes. If you missed the previous ones, you have another opportunity to take this fun class on Monday, September 30, 10:30-3:30. Kat Martinez is teaching.

October 1, 11-1, learn how to use the smallest of the Handi Quilter machines in Getting Started: The Simply Sixteen. Barbara Bean will show you how to use and maintain the machine. Completion of the course allows you to rent our machine. It is also a great introduction to the Simply Sixteen if you are contemplating purchasing one for your home.
October 3, 10:15 – 1:15, Kathy Barden will guide you in making a Project Bag from ByAnnie. These are flat bags with a vinyl front so you can see what is inside, a zipper closure, a quilted back, and a handle.
There are lots of skills to learn in this class!
In the afternoon on October 3, from 2-4, Karen Fricke is teaching the first part of Introduction to Machine Quilting. Learn how to set up your machine for quilting, what needle to use, following a stencil, quilting with a walking foot, and free motion quilting. The second part is the following week, on the 10th, 2-4. A kit is included in the class fee.
The next Getting Started: The Handi Quilter Longarm Machine is scheduled for Friday, October 4, 6-9.
A Rag Basket would make a nifty gift, and don’t you know the holidays are soon upon us. Take Lois Sumser’s class on Monday, October 21, 2:30-5:30 to learn how to make these interesting baskets.
Another nice gift is the Sew Together Bag. Phyliss Jaffe will show you how to make on Tuesday, October 22, 10:30-1:30, with a follow up session the following Tuesday.
October 22 is also Sandwich Day. Five appointments are available beginning at 1pm. Bring your quilt top, backing, and batting and basting spray or pins and we’ll have your quilt sandwiched within the hour.
CAPITAL QUILTS CARES
Quilts of Valor: These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country. Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor. The next workshop is on Friday, October 25, 2-4:30.
Small Kennel Quilts: We are always accepting small kennel quilts, and we always have free basic kits available for you to take home to make and return to us. (The quilts are great stash-busters, too!) They are a perfect little project for practicing your quilting skills. We receive requests from shelters for completed kennel quilts on a frequent basis; with the hurricanes and large storms the country has been experiencing, we’ve been shipping over 100 quilts a week lately.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Join the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Baltimore Constellation Chapter for a very special event! Heather Hook’s “Closet of History: A Timeline of Embroidery & Fashion in the 19th Century” on Saturday, October 12th at the Chartwell Country Club (no stairs!) in Severna Park. Heather will be sharing a large portion of her 4000+ antique clothing collection with participants. Learn about the rise and fall of women’s fashions in the 19th century with special emphasis on embroidered pieces. Lunch will be served. $40 per person. Are you part of a group that needs a meeting space? Capital Quilts is happy to rent you its classroom for just $25 an hour. It is a great space for sewing bees, small sewing, knitting, or other craft groups, and kid’s sewing parties. Our staff is on hand to assist you. You can bring food and drink (please keep it in the classroom!).
