What's New at CQ 7/25/19

"Some people find perfection an art in itself, and I just don’t. To me what’s important about a design, or a textile is that it has life in it. I’ve seen things that are so perfect that they are just ‘yawn’, they are just utterly lifeless and boring… bloodless." Kaffe Fassett

Dear Fabriculous Friends,

Only 6 more days to take advantage of Janome’s Employee Pricing event! Take 25% off regular machine prices through July 31. All machines are included. Plus you get the chance to win any one of 22 prizes just for sitting down for a demo of a machine. Buy a Horn of America sewing cabinet at the same time and take 20% off the regular price of the cabinet. These are the best prices of the year. Don’t miss out!

Have you ever been to Sisters, Oregon on the 2nd weekend of July? That is the weekend that the Sisters Quilt Show takes place every year. This year was the 44th Sisters Quilt Show. It was started by Jean Wells with 12 of her family’s quilts. The following year, a few quilters asked if they could participate, and the year after that a few more joined in. This year, there were some 1500 quilts hanging on the sides of buildings, under tents, on cars, inside shops, and anywhere else a quilt could be squeezed. The show is indoors and outside and the streets are blocked off in the town. Classes and lectures are held; I went to a wonderful lecture given by the ladies of Gee’s Bend the year I went. There are vendors and, of course, Jean and Valorie Wells’ shop, The Stitching Post. Interesting fact: in 44 years, only one year has it rained! Take a look at videos of the show on YouTube. Plan to go in 2020!

Due to a death in Barbara’s family, the Getting Started: HQ Longarm Machines class that was scheduled for August 2 has been rescheduled for Friday, August 16, 6-9. There is room in this class for those of you interested in learning about the longarm machines.

The patterns for the By Annie Trunk Show have finally arrived! Find lots of nifty bags, totes, and organizers on the table as soon as you walk in the front door.

Cut less and sew more! AccuQuilt is offering great savings on their machines and over 60 different dies. Some of the dies are as much as 40% off. You can reduce your cutting time by 90% using the AccuQuilt system, giving you lots more time to do what you love, which is sew. Save time and money by purchasing your AccuQuilt machine and dies in July.

Thank you for shopping at Capital Quilts!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

Jan Wisor has made 13 Star Storm quilts! She is teaching the class again, beginning on Friday, July 26, 2-5. The class is a total of 3 sessions; the other two are on August 9 & 23. Star Storm Mini, a smaller 40" square version, is perfect for babies and toddlers. Sign up for this one soon, before it fills up!

Our July Sit ‘n’ Sew is on Friday, July 26, 5-9. Bring a project to work on and some food to share with your fellow sewists. Capital Quilts provides the beverages.

Learn how to use the Handi Quilter longarm machines and finish all your own quilts! Make room in those closets and drawers that currently house your unfinished quilt tops. Barbara Bean teaches Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm on Monday, July 29, 11-2. Completion of the class certifies you to rent time on our longarms.

August Classes
Make a tote bag for your trips to the beach, pool, and library this month! Kathy Barden teaches The Basic Tote Bag on Thursday, August 1, 1:30-3:30. This is the first in a series of bag classes. Look for the next one in September, the Vinyl Mesh Market Tote on September 5. Minimum skill level: confident beginner.

Learn how to use the Handi Quilter and finish your own quilts! Barbara Bean teaches Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm on Friday, August 2, 6-9. Completion of the course certifies you to rent our Amara and Forte longarm machines. It is also a great way to become familiar with the machines if you are contemplating purchasing one for your home or studio.

Alison Vermilya, designer of Ready. Set. Soar!, is teaching this quilt class on Saturday, August 3, 1-4. You will learn easy piecing and applique skills. The quilt is perfect for babies and toddlers. Use Alison’s applique (she will have several templates with her for you to use) or bring your own. Minimum skill level: confident beginner.

It’s time once again for Kid’s Camp! Each morning, from 10:30-1, during the week of August 5-9, we’ll have fun making a drawstring backpack, a zippered pouch, and a mini quilt, and we’ll learn how to embroider by hand and sew on a button. If your child has come to camp before and done one or more of these projects already and doesn’t want to make another, we’ll find some other fun project for him or her. We are quite flexible that way. Our aim is to have fun and learn a little about the wonderful handicraft called sewing.

Kim Jalette is here on Tuesday, August 6 to teach Mod Dog/Cat from 2-4. The “Mod” quilts are a combination of piecing and applique. Use a jelly roll and strip piecing techniques to make the dogs or cats and applique them to the center panel of the quilt. Add the scrappy sides, and you’ve got a super delightful quilt.

If you’ve got the basics of Free Motion quilting under your belt and you’d like to learn more, I highly recommend Karen Fricke’s More Fun With Free Motion class. Karen will talk about borders, sashing, fillers, feathers, and more. Wednesday, August 7, 2-4.

Get help sandwiching your quilts on Friday, August 9. Appointments are available at 6, 7, and 8pm.

The next Featherweight Clinic is on Saturday, August 10, 2:30-5. Learn how to take your Singer Featherweight apart, clean it, and lube it. Marianne shows you how.
