What's New at CQ 3/7/19

"Both the Winter and the Summer Solstices are expressions of love. They show us the opposition of light and dark, expansion and contraction, that characterize our experiences in the Earth school so that we can recognize our options as we move through our lives." Gary Zukav

Dear Fabric Lovers,

Northcott is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of its Stonehenge line this year. That is an amazingly long time for a fabric line to be in existence. To mark the event, they have created a line of fabric called Stonehenge Solstice and a panel of Stonehenge. You, our delightful customers, can participate in the festivities in two ways. The first is the Stonehenge Panel Quilt Challenge. Use the Solstice panel and fabrics to create a quilt no larger than 60” x 60”. Bring it to the shop not later than November 15; we’ll hang them in the Gallery and hold a period of voting. The winning quilt receives a Stonehenge Precut Prize Pack. A picture of the winning quilt will be sent to Northcott for entry at the national level. The ten national winners receive a Stonehenge fabric prize valued at $100 and their shops receive a credit toward future Northcott purchases.

The second festivity is the Stonehenge Block Party, March 15-September 30. Participating shops from around the world, including Capital Quilts, have each designed an original block using the Solstice fabrics. Each shop will kit the block with its pattern and fabric and offer them for sale. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to collect as many blocks as you can and use at least 12 different blocks to make a quilt. The quilt top and binding must be made of 100% Stonehenge fabrics from the Solstice collection; you can also use the Stonehenge Gradations Oxidized Copper palette and/or the Stonehenge Gradations Robin’s Egg fabrics. The quilt back is your choice. Submit your quilt to the Northcott Block Party competition via Northcott’s online site by December 31, 2019. Northcott will select 10 semifinalists from shops around the world. Those 10 will send their quilts to Northcott for a final judging. The Grand Prize is a 9-day trip to England for 2 with a private tour of Stonehenge in June, 2020! Second Prize is $1000 and a Stonehenge fabric prize pack valued at $250. Third Prize is $500 and a Stonehenge fabric prize pack valued at $100.

We are working on a display for the Stonehenge celebrations to enter a competition for the shops. If you have any Stonehenge-like ‘stones’ made out of Styrofoam or other lightweight material, we’d love to borrow them! The fabrics, panels, and block kits will be available for sale beginning March 15. We’ll post all of these rules and dates online and in the shop; you can visit the Northcott website, too, for more news, pictures, and inspiration.

Did you know you can shop at Capital Quilts in the middle of the night? Or from anywhere that has internet service? In your pjs and slippers? We have a web shop: https://www.capitalquilts.com/shop.htm Check it out!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

Jan Wisor is teaching Star Storm, starting on Friday, March 8, 10:15-1:15. The quilt is built by strategically placing strips of fabric to form rings around a central pieced inner star. The Star Storm is not paper pieced but formed on large scale paper templates to create the star points. The class will walk step by step through the placement of strips and aligning the angles to form the star. There are just 3 spots open.

Are you ready to go the next step with your longarm quilting? Elyse is teaching Getting Started: the Basics of ProStitcher Premium on Friday, March 8, 6-9. Learn the structure, functions, and buttons of ProStitcher Premium, the computer technology that allows you to finish your quilts more quickly and with greater precision. Learn how to customize edge-to-edge designs on your computer to fit any quilt size and transfer the design to your ProStitcher Premium.

Elyse is teaching EQ8 on Saturday, March 9, 1-4. EQ8 has a brand new and more intuitive look, and some new and improved tools. EQ8 is a computer-based program with which you can preview, color, and even resize your quilt. It will calculate yardage, add the ¼ inch seam allowance, and create templates, rotary cutting instructions, or foundation piecing patterns.

Jelly Roll Rugs are quite popular right now! Susan Stanton-Carr will show you how to make the Jelly Roll Rug Squared on Sunday, March 10, 2:30-4:30. They come in both a rectangle and oval shapes; Susan is teaching the rectangle. Once you know the technique, you can apply it to making other shapes. We have lots of jelly rolls (packages of forty 2½” strips) in the shop right now. We also have pre-cut batting.

Do you have a love/hate relationship with your serger? Or are you thinking about getting one and want to know more about them first? Barbara Kascic is teaching Sergers Made Easy on Tuesday, March 12, 10:30-1:30.

If you are interested in renting our Handi Quilter longarm machines to finish your quilts by yourself, take Getting Started: the HQ Longarm on Wednesday, March 13, 11-2. You will be certified to rent the machines at the end of the class. Having a mentor with you during your first rental, at no charge, is included in the price of the class.

Got scraps? May I suggest the Mini Mosaics class, taught by Kat Martinez starting on March 14, 7-9? These wonderful little mosaic quilts are a perfect use for them. Use the mosaic cutting tool to cut your scraps and the pattern to arrange and fuse them in place. Some easy quilting with your walking foot, and you’re done!

Enjoy up to six blissful hours of distraction-free sewing and fun at Night Owl. It's almost a mini-retreat! Includes a $10 CQ Gift Card, pizza, and beverages. Work on a new project or finish up an old one. Kat will stay with you as late as midnight on Saturday, April 16, starting at 6pm.

On Sunday, March 17th, at 12:30pm, Barbara Bean offers Rulers for the Longarm: an Introduction. Learn how to properly hold and use a ruler on a longarm machine and what additional supplies you need when working with longarm rulers. You will have the opportunity to try out rulers for yourself.

CAPITAL QUILTS CARES:
All events are free. Please register for each workshop so that we know how many to expect. Coming up in March:

March 31 – Days for Girls: In some countries, girls are unable to attend school for up to a week a month because they don’t have access to sanitary supplies. Days For Girls is a non-profit organization that sends sustainable personal hygiene kits to girls around the world. Everything necessary is packed into a small drawstring bag that can be carried every day. Capital Quilts Cares has contributed to this project in the past by sewing the drawstring bags, and we’re asking for your help to do it again. Bring your machine and basic sewing supplies. There are 4 places remaining. Skill level: easy.

All fabrics are provided, but we ask you to bring a new, colorful, pretty washcloth or two to add to the bags. Thank you!

SMALL KENNEL QUILTS: We are always accepting small kennel quilts, and we always have free kits available for you to take home to make and return to us. They are a perfect little project for practicing your quilting skills! We receive requests from shelters for completed kennel quilts on a frequent basis, and this week we received three separate requests from California and Alabama. We are running low on finished quilts and need your help making more.
