Dear February Fabric Fiends I mean Friends,
Our thanks to everyone who shops at Capital Quilts. We know that our customers have choices, including cheaper, online shops. But online stores don’t provide the services that we do, or talk to you one-on-one about your project, or let you see and touch the fabric, so you can judge the quality and color without a monitor in the way. Here at the shop, you can take classes, volunteer for community projects such as Quilts of Valor, and get practical advice from our knowledgeable staff on how to do things like attach a border or miter a corner or use an Add-A-Quarter ruler or calculate how much you need for your backing or how much fabric you need to make that darling quilt you saw in a magazine. Yes, you may pay a little more here at Capital Quilts, but you get so much more in return. We are more like a community center, a place to make friends, learn a handicraft, stretch your creative mind, contribute to the greater community, share, commiserate, empower others and be empowered. We thank you every day for supporting your local quilt shop!
So, a heartfelt thank you for shopping at Capital Quilts. Tell your friends about us, like us on Facebook, tag us on Instagram. Let your Scout troops know that we are glad to host events for badge work or offer a place to have troop meetings. Use our classroom to have meetings of your sewing groups. Are you a designer, author, or pattern writer? We’d love to have you teach or give a lecture here and/or have a Trunk Show here. Are you a member of a guild? Pull together a selection of your guild members’ quilts and we’ll hang them in our Gallery for a couple of weeks; it will advertise your guild and might bring you new members. Want to learn a particular technique or make a particular quilt? Ask two or more friends to join you and we’ll create a class for you. The terrific Capital Quilts team is here to help!
Have you seen our great TNT Pressing Boards? TNT pressing boards are handmade in Massachusetts out of high-quality wood and covered in decorative cotton canvas and batting. The edges of the fabric are turned under and stapled down and the corners secured with screws. Clamps on the Great Board are designed to hold the board securely to an ironing board, providing a stable and wide work surface. The smaller boards have fold out feet and a handle for carrying the board and are perfect for vacations, retreats, classes, and the like. The Studio Table has legs that fold up for storage and transport and can are adjustable for height. The two pressing stations provide extra storage under the work surface, plus you don’t have to take the TNT board off the ironing board whenever you need to use it. Ask to see the boards the next time you are visiting the shop.

SHOP OPEN UNTIL 9PM: Through March 20, the shop is open from 10am-9pm on Wednesday and Friday. We are also open until 9 on Tuesday, February 12. We are always open until 9 on Fridays; when we have an evening class, we keep the shop open then, too.
IN THE GALLERY
The quilts in the Gallery are the work of Gail Fredricks. Gail is a staff member here at Capital Quilts as well as a pattern designer. It is she who arranges most of our displays and decorates the shop for Quilters’ Quest and other events. Her creative joy is evident in her work and is much appreciated here in the shop! Gail will be doing a Gallery Talk on Saturday, February 16, at 1:30.

CLEARANCE EVENT: I have decided that Capital Quilts will no longer be a Floriani dealer. Floriani thread, stabilizers, SewMuch CosPlay products, and notions are on sale 40% off February 1-15. After the 15th, remaining items will go into regular clearance at 30% off. All sales are final. I will replace the thread with Superior Thread’s Magnifico as colors are emptied. Magnifico comes in both spools and mini cones. I am stocking the spools. If you find you need the mini-cone, please let me know and I will order it for you. For stabilizers and such we will carry Sulky products. Please bear with us as we make the transition. Note that machine needles are not included in this clearance event.

QUILTING HOOP: I have a gently used floor stand quilting hoop being offered for sale by one of our customers. It has a 29” hoop, is height adjustable, and is all wood. It was handmade by a woodworking artisan in Lancaster County, PA. Originally $300, the asking price is $150. The condition of the hoop is excellent.

Magnifico from Superior Threads is a bold, strong thread created for quilting and embroidery. Magnifico is an extra-strength, high-sheen polyester that can handle the speed and tension of longarm and commercial machines, while displaying bold and beautiful shades of color. Available in 200 solid colors, so you won’t run out of color options. Unlike most high-strength trilobal polyester threads, Magnifico is 'heat set' in processing, which eliminates unwanted shrinkage. $4.99 per spool.
Somebody to Love from Windham Fabrics features two panels: one for dog lovers, and one for cat lovers. There are also 7 animal rescue themed coordinates. Panels, $9.95 each, bolted fabric, $12.50 per yard.
CLASSES
Register for classes online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598. Please register early; we need at least 3 people to make a class happen. If the class is cancelled by Capital Quilts, or if you let us know you can’t make it at least 7 days in advance of the class, you will get a refund or store credit.
Need help sandwiching your quilt? The next Sandwich Night is Friday, February 8, and there are appointments at 7 and 8 o’clock. Bring your quilt top and back, both squared and pressed; your batting; and spray adhesive or pins. If you are having your quilt quilted by a longarm quilter, you do not need to sandwich the quilt.
Lois Sumser is a master at making Rag Bowls. Every time she comes to teach a class, she brings lots of new models. One recent model had a hinged top! If you’d like to learn how to make these fabulous bowls, sign up for Lois’ next class on Saturday, February 9, 2:30-5:30. Skill level: intermediate.
Join Kim and Kat to work on your Millie Stars! Millie Stars is a BOM/Quiltalong by Katja Marek, and may be English Paper Pieced, Hand-pieced, or machine-pieced. Kim and Kat will share tips on organization, cutting, and stitching. Sunday, February 10, 2:30-4:30. Skill level: confident beginner.
Get ready for Spring and Summer with this stylish, casual jacket. The Little Somethin' pattern includes sizes 8 to 24, and offers a 3/4 or full-length sleeve as well as a longer or shorter length. Barbara Kascic will help you get a perfect fit. Take the class on Tuesday, February 12, 10-3. Skill level: intermediate.
Machine quilt your own quilts! Take Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Simply Sixteen on Wednesday, February 13, 11-1 to become eligible to rent the Simply Sixteen. Skill level: beginner longarmer.
Wool is now a very popular medium for crafting quilts, bags, and more. Learn how to do wool embroidery in Liz Brodsky’s Introduction to Wool Embroidery class on Thursday, February 14, 2:30-5. Allergic to wool? Use flannel instead! The embroidery stitches are the same. Skill level: beginner.
The always popular Retreat Bag class is being offered again on Sunday, February 17, 12-5. Annie Jeffrey helps you make this nifty bag that zips open and stays open for easy retrieval of sewing supplies, make-up, school supplies, or whatever you choose to put into it. Skill level: intermediate.
Machine quilt your own quilts! Take Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine on Sunday, February 17, 12:30-3:30 to become eligible to rent the Amara or Forte. Skill level: beginner longarmer.
Learn how to use rulers to quilt on your domestic sewing machine in Rulers for the Sewing Machine on Monday, February 18, 2:30-4:30. Learn how to use straight, curved, and circular templates to achieve the look of longarm quilting on your home sewing machine. You will be able to try each of the rulers. Skill level: intermediate.
Join the Art & Stitch Club and learn how to use the software to create embroidery and quilting patterns in your computer and transfer them to your machine. The next meeting is Sunday, February 24, 12:30-2:30. All skill levels welcome.
