Dear Lovers of Fabric,

There are two books that we are having trouble keeping in stock these days: Walk, by Jacquie Gering, and Pin Pals, by Carrie Nelson. Walk is a guide to machine quilting on your domestic sewing machine using a walking foot. It has loads of pictures. It is quite amazing what one can do with a walking foot! Pin Pals is a collection of 40 different patterns for pin cushions, many of them using miniaturized quilt blocks, both traditional and contemporary. I am considering doing a challenge using this book, I like it that much. If you would like either or both of these books, put your order in and we’ll let you know as soon as they come in. If you make pin cushions, we also sell the ground up walnut shells with which to stuff them.

Do you “quilt by check”? If you do, make sure you let your quilter know what your expectations are. Don’t assume he or she will automatically fix your seams or attach the binding. Ask questions! Here at Capital Quilts we want you to be happy, ecstatic even, with the finished product. Happiness starts with good communication between the quilt owner and the quilter. You should receive a written work order that specifies what service(s) is/are being offered and at what price, what thread and thread color has been agreed upon, and what the quilting pattern will be. Ask for it if the quilter forgets to offer it to you.

We will be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day!  Looking for a service project to do as a family?  Consider our "Scarf It Up" workshop.  Details listed below in the CQ Cares area.

If you are a machine embroiderer or longarm quilter and would like to know more about Art & Stitch, the software that helps you design embroidery and quilting patterns, join the Art & Stitch Club this year. The first meeting is on Sunday, January 27, 12:30-2:30. The club meets once a month on the 4th Sunday of the month. Art & Stitch is compatible with Handi Quilter ProStitcher, Bernina Q-Matic, PCIntelliQuilter, PC Quilter, Statler Stitcher Side Saddle, Quilt EZ, and QBOT HPGL as well as various embroidery machines. All skill levels are welcome. Wouldn’t it be fun to be able to turn your children’s or grandchildren’s artwork into an embroidery or quilting design?

Great news from the TNT Quilt Board company: they now offer the means to turn your Great Board into a pressing station. The Retro Rack has a special insert that keeps the Great Board clasped to the rack. Two shelves provide extra storage. It comes with adjustable feet and is approximately 37” high. You can add 3” or 4” wheels to gain extra height. The rack is 36” long and 16” wide. The introductory price is $129.99. Casters are $39.99. Get your Great Board off that tippy ironing board! Go to our online shop or call us at 301-527-0598 to order yours today!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

CLASSES
Register for classes online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598. Please register early; we need at least 3 people to make a class happen. If the class is cancelled by Capital Quilts, or if you let us know you can’t make it at least 7 days in advance of the class, you will get a refund or store credit.

Night Owl Sewing: Join Kat Martinez on Saturday, January 19, 6-midnight, for six blissful hours of distraction-free sewing. No phone, no hungry kids and spouses, no dogs to walk. The price includes a $10 Capital Quilts Gift Card, pizza, and beverages.

Everybody is talking about the Glam Clam quilt! Take the class, taught by Kim Jalette and Kat Martinez, on Sunday, January 20, 2:30-4:30 with the 2nd session meeting on Sunday, February 3, 12-2. Please note the change in date and time, which has been made necessary by last weekend’s snow storm. There are 2 places left in this class. Hint: use your AccuQuilt GO! to do the cutting. It took Kat and Kim all afternoon to cut out the clams by hand for the first quilt they made, and they had to go back and mark registration lines on them. It took Kat 45 minutes by herself to cut out the clams for the second quilt using the GO! machine, and the machine cut the registration notches at the same time. Another customer’s 4-year-old grandson cut out clams for her using her GO! machine; it kept him busy for a whole hour and she got in some sewing time. Skill level: intermediate.

Get into the spirit of winter by making Woven Snowflakes with Debra Ball on Tuesday, January 22, 10:15-12:15. These snowflakes can be used as tree ornaments, package decorations, on mantles, in windows, or anywhere else that need some flair! Skill Level: no sewing, just cut and paste. You can do this!

Need help getting your quilt sandwiched? Our next Sandwich Day is Tuesday, January 22. Appointments are available at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 o’clock. Please note that if you plan to have your quilting done on a longarm machine with rollers, you do not need to sandwich it. Sit-down longarms and hoop-style stand-up longarms do require that a quilt be sandwiched.

Machine quilt your own quilts! Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine on Friday, January 25, 6-9 or Wednesday, January 30, 11-2, to become eligible to rent one of our machines. Skill level: beginner longarmer.

Our first Sit-n-Sew of the year is on Friday, January 25, 5-9. This free event is your time to come sew your own projects in the shop without the distractions you find at home. You’ll be joined by folks interested in the same craft you are, giving the opportunity to share stories, answers, and advice and to make new friends. I hope you’ll join us!

Eureka! Pants That Fit is a garment class taught by Rae Cumbie. You’ll learn how to fit pants to your own figure, different ways to finish the waist band, how to insert a zipper, and so much more. This class is a 2-day workshop on Thursday, January 31, 10-4 and Friday, February 1, 10-4. As I write this, there are 4 places remaining in the class. Skill level: intermediate.

Do you love a pretty table runner? This one is Simply a Pleasure. Learn how to make this table runner on Monday, February 4, 1-4 with Cathy Sullivan. Skill level: confident beginner.

The January prize is a pattern booklet excerpt from Eleanor Burns' Forty Fabulous Years (Quilt in a Day).

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.
