MAKE THIS QUILT!

Dear Sewalicious Friends,

We have had to postpone the start of the 1st Saturday Club due to the club leader’s having to have emergency surgery for a back problem. Pat is very sorry to have to do this, but there is no way around the fact that she needed the surgery now. We are hoping to be able to start in March (but will not be surprised if it is April). Please be assured that whenever we begin, you will enjoy the entire 12 months of the club. Pat, on behalf of the Capital Quilts community, I hope your surgery is successful and your recovery swift!

It looks like winter is finally arriving, complete with snow this weekend. Let’s talk about CQ’s weather policy in general. It’s a bit tricky deciding whether or not to close the shop, due to the fact that we have customers, teachers, and staff who come from MD, VA, PA, and WV on a regular basis and I don’t want to disappoint people. In the end, it all comes down to safety. If the roads in the Gaithersburg area can be safely traveled, and if enough of my staff to run the shop can safely get to the shop, I will open. We will post our status on our website and Facebook and leave a message on our phone. Be sure to check one of those options if you are thinking about visiting us on a snowy or icy day. If a class or club meeting is impacted, we will make every effort to reschedule the meeting; members will be notified of any changes. If we are forced to cancel a class, you will receive a refund of your registration fee.

This Sunday, members of the EPP Club and Glam Clam class should check on whether or not the shop is open before heading out. You will receive either a phone call or an email from Kat or Kim letting you know what “Plan B” is for rescheduling the class and club; we have that plan in place, should we need it.

By my calendar, this snowstorm is a week late. My husband has been attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas nearly every year since 1985. I can’t tell you how many times I have been snowed in during this week, once without heat and flushing toilets, over the years. I think this is another sign of climate change!

If you are a machine embroiderer or longarm quilter and would like to know more about Art & Stitch, the software that helps you design embroidery and quilting patterns, join the Art & Stitch Club this year. The first meeting is on Sunday, January 27, 12:30-2:30. The club meets once a month on the 4th Sunday of the month. Art & Stitch is compatible with Handi Quilter ProStitcher, Bernina Q-Matic, PCIntelliQuilter, PC Quilter, Statler Stitcher Side Saddle, Quilt EZ, and QBOT HPGL. All skill levels are welcome. Wouldn’t it be fun to be able to turn your children’s or grandchildren’s artwork into an embroidery or quilting design?

Great news from the TNT Quilt Board company: they now offer the means to turn your Great Board into a pressing station. The Retro Rack has a special insert that keeps the Great Board clasped to the rack. Two shelves provide extra storage. It comes with adjustable feet and is approximately 37” high. You can add 3” or 4” wheels to gain extra height. The rack is 36” long and 16” wide. The introductory price is $129.99. Casters are $39.99. Get your Great Board off that tippy ironing board! Go to our online shop at www.capitalquilts.com or call us at 301-527-0598 to order yours today!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

IN THE GALLERY The next time you are in the shop, take a stroll through our Gallery at the top of the ramp. Kim Jalette has several quilts on display that illustrate her journey as a quilter. Kim is a teacher here at Capital Quilts. Her quilts are beautiful and beautifully made. Many of the hanging quilts were, and are, models for classes she has taught. One quilt has never been seen before; Kim has promised to teach this one, too! Kim will be giving a Gallery talk at 11:30 on Saturday, January 26.

WHAT’S NEW AT CQ

Are giraffes your thing?  Stock up on Stand Tall from Windham.  $12.50 per yard.

Cold weather calls for flannel quilts and cuddling with cats.  Accomplish both goals with these three bolts of cat-themed flannel from Robert Kaufman.  $$12.50 per yard.

Opus from Windham Fabrics will have you singing in the streets! We have 12 bolts of this musically themed fabric in black, white, and greys.  $12.50 per yard.

CLASSES
Register for classes online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598. Please register early; we need at least 3 people to make a class happen. If the class is cancelled by Capital Quilts, or if you let us know you can’t make it at least 7 days in advance of the class, you will get a refund or store credit.

Machine quilt your own quilts! Take Getting Started: the Simply Sixteen on Tuesday, January 15, 11-2, or Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine on Friday, January 25, 6-9 or Wednesday, January 30, 11-2, to become eligible to rent one of our machines.

Need a quilt project for January? How about the intriguing Mirage quilt? Hilary Hastie teaches this class in two sessions on Fridays, January 11 and 25, from 10:15 to 1:15. Intermediate level.

Who doesn’t love a Zippered Pouch? Annie Jeffrey will show you how to make them on Saturday, January 12, 2:30-5:30. Make a bunch and keep them on hand for gifts. My daughters love these! Skill level: easy.

If you’ve learned the ins and outs of using the Handi Quilter longarm machines, maybe it is time to take the next step and learn how to use the ProStitcher, the computer software that allows you tell the computer how you want your quilt quilted and then push a button to set it to working. Take Getting Started: The Basics of ProStitcher on Saturday, January 12, 10:30-1:30.

Everybody is talking about the Glam Clam quilt! Take the class, taught by Kim Jalette and Kat Martinez, on Sunday, January 13 & 20, 2:30-4:30. Hint: use your AccuQuilt GO! to do the cutting. It took Kat and Kim all afternoon to cut out the clams by hand for the first quilt they made, and they had to go back and mark registration lines on them. It took Kat 45 minutes by herself to cut out the clams for the second quilt using the GO! machine, and the machine cut the registration notches at the same time. Another customer’s 4-year-old grandson cut out clams for her using her GO! machine; it kept him busy for a whole hour and she got in some sewing time. Skill level: intermediate.

If zippers perplex you, sign up to take Barbara Kascic’s 5 Zippers Workshop on Tuesday, January 15, 10:30-1:30. She’ll show you how to install a basic zipper, a faced zipper, a lapped zipper, an invisible zipper, and a separating zipper. You will take home a sample of each for future reference. Skill level: intermediate.

Here’s a stash buster: the Rag Basket. Lois Sumser is back to teach this popular class on Thursday, January 17, 10:30-1:30. Limit: 8 people. Make your bowl with clothesline wrapped with strips of fabric. Learn how to finish off with a fancy handle and how to add embellishments. Skill level: Intermediate.

Join Kat Martinez on Saturday, January 19, 6-midnight, for six blissful hours of distraction-free sewing. No phone, no hungry kids and spouses, no dogs to walk. The price includes a $10 Capital Quilts Gift Card, pizza, and beverages.

Get into the spirit of winter by making Woven Snowflakes with Debra Ball on Tuesday, January 22, 10:15-12:15. These snowflakes can be used as tree ornaments, package decorations, on mantles, in windows, or anywhere else that need some flair! Skill Level: no sewing, just cut and paste. You can do this!

Need help getting your quilt sandwiched? Our next Sandwich Day is Tuesday, January 22. Appointments are available at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 o’clock. Please note that if you plan to have your quilting done on a longarm machine with rollers, you do not need to sandwich it. Sit-down longarms and hoop-style stand-up longarms do require that a quilt be sandwiched.

CAPITAL QUILTS CARES

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.
