What's New at CQ 110118

"The vote is precious. It's almost sacred, so go out and vote like you never voted before." John Lewis

Dear Sewingistas,

To all of you who participated in Quilters’ Quest 2018, thank you very much! I hope you had as much fun as the Capital Quilts staff and I had preparing for the Quest and visiting with you and assisting you during the Quest. We appreciate your business, during Quest and all year round.

Coming up in just 9 days is our fall AccuQuilt GO! Education Event. AccuQuilt National Educator Jeannie Miller will be with us on November 9 and 10 for 3 classes full of information, tips, tricks, and quilts, not to mention a fun time! The Friday morning class at 10:30 is called “Cut Less, Quilt More” and is for beginners. Friday afternoon at 2:30, Jeannie goes into more depth about the AccuQuilt machines and how to make creative use of them; this is an intermediate class. Finally, on Saturday morning at 10:30, Jeannie offers an advanced class called “There’s a Die for That”; she shows us how to adapt a pattern so that the AccuQuilt GO! machine can be used to do the cutting. Each class is $10, and you’ll receive a $10 Capital Quilts Gift Card at the door. We’ll have prizes and giveaways as well. Sign up online, in person at the shop, or by phone at 301-527-0598. Do it today!

Handi Quilter is introducing 3 new products at Quilt Market: the HighLight LED lighting system, My Secret Drawer, and a new tool tray. Click here for pictures and more information about the HighLight, and here for My Secret Drawer. The HighLight is a free-standing light system with adjustable height and adjustable shutters on the fixtures to direct the light just where you want it most. It fits comes in a 5’ and 8’/10’ size, with 2’ extensions for 12’ and 14’ frames. The system can be used with all brands of longarms and I suspect that it can be used over cutting tables, sewing tables, craft areas, and so on. I’ll find out more at Quilt Market! The prices are $349.95 for the HighLight 5, $499.95 for the HighLight 8/10, and $99.95 for each 2’ extension.

My Secret Drawer fits the Little Foot, Studio, and Gallery frames (but not the bent-leg style). It is about 33 x 19 x 6 and will hold up to 96 cones of thread, lots of rulers and templates, or just plain stuff. You can put up to 3 of them on a 12’ frame, but note that while the drawer will clear the batting pole, it may not clear the roll of batting. If you store batting on your frame, you should just get one drawer. The retail price is $249.95 for the Studio and Gallery drawers and $274.95 for the Little Foot drawer. What will you put in your Secret Drawer?

The new tool tray will have adjustable inserts so that you can customize it to your own needs. It will be priced at $79.95.

I am taking pre-orders for the three new HQ products. Delivery starts in December. There are also machine package deals that include the HighLight and My Secret Drawer: see “Vendor Specials” below.

Wondering what to get yourself for a holiday present? How about a really comfortable sewing chair? Heavenly Seating has three sizes of adjustable chairs to fit almost anyone. They adjust up and down and front to back and have adjustable lumbar support. There are lots of options to choose from (arms or no arms, caster for hard floors vs. carpet, casters that lock, casters that won’t roll when you are sitting in the chair, over 150 colors in several different fabrics, and more). Try one out in the Sewing Machine Department next time you are in the shop.

Capital Quilts needs someone to do quilting for customers. The job includes meeting with customers to determine pattern, thread color, and any other requirements; doing the quilting in a professional and timely way; and completing paperwork. Also available are opportunities to teach classes and mentor rental customers. Please respond to this newsletter email if this is something you are interested in doing.

If you are a pro at quilting with Westalee rulers on your domestic sewing machine and you like to teach, I am looking for someone to teach Westalee classes here at the shop. If you are interested, please reply to this newsletter.

I am off to Houston today for the fall Quilt Market! If there is anything you would like me to look for, please send an email to alison@capitalquilts.com.

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

On Friday, November 2 at 10:30am, join Annette for a relaxing hands-on and in-depth class on Needleturn Appliqué by hand. In the first session, you will learn how to trace your pattern, prepare your pattern shapes and the stitch. In the second session, you will learn techniques that allow you to vary the method to better suit your project and sewing pleasure. No prior applique experience is necessary.

Learn the essentials for a beautiful binding, perfectly finishing any quilt in Binding Basics, offered Saturday, November 3rd, at 2pm. The class introduces types of bindings, design options, calculating fabric requirements, cutting straight grain or bias binding, and preparing mitered or pieced binding strips. You’ll learn how to turn perfect corners and use the “Magic X” method to join the binding ends. You’ll also learn an easy machine-sewn method using a faux flange.

On Sunday, November 4th, join Ginny Brown for Crossfire. Whirling stars set off with chains of black and grey make a quilt with lots of sparkle! Pick a border fabric, add some coordinating colors, some black, white and grey, and this fun new variation of Flying Geese is sure to please!

Spend Tuesday, November 6th with Rae Cumbie, leader of our Sew! Let’s Get Dressed Club as she introduces you to her favorite Surface Design Techniques for clothing. Try out Sheva Paintsticks and raw edge collage. See examples of how beads and buttons bring clothing to life. Bring solid cottons in various weights and prints with large scale motifs if you like. Throw in some clothing with spots or holes that need a new life. Class starts at 10am.
