What's New at CQ 10/18/18

"Color is dynamic, fickle, explosive, solemn, mysterious, and beautiful." -Maria Shell

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Quilters’ Quest starts tomorrow! From October 19-28, visit 10 shops in 10 days and earn a discount card good for 15% off at all 10 participating shops through September 2019. You get a nifty tote bag, too. If you finish your 10-shop tour at Capital Quilts, you’ll find a few goodies in that tote bag! Visit www.quiltersquest.org for more information.

Don’t want to do all that driving while Questing? Leave the driving to us! Relax on a luxury coach on October 19 & 20 or October 22 & 23 (we have two buses). We take care of all the details; you just have fun shopping and visiting each of the shops. If you can’t do both days on one of the buses, but you can do one day on bus #1 and one day on bus #2, we can accommodate that. Remember that you’ll need to do the Day 1 itinerary on one bus and Day 2 on the other bus. You can also ride for just one day, for $80, which includes breakfast and lunch.

The Quest theme this year is Cruising the World. Each shop is a different port-of-call. Our port is Sydney, Australia. Come visit the Sydney Zoo and take a side trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Stop by Customs & Immigration to get your passport stamped. Quilts made with Aboriginal fabrics will be hanging in the Gallery. Kiki the Koala will be waiting for you to find her on your Scavenger Hunt! I do hope you will join us Down Under.

The new AccuQuilt dies are here! There are 5: Spring Medley, Big Crazy Quilt (10” finished), Bear’s Paw (14” finished), Lowercase Carefree Alphabet (a 2-die set), and my favorite, Cleopatra’s Fan (12” finished). Look for them when you come for Quilters’ Quest!

We’ve made some changes in the layout of the shop. The cash register desks are now located to your left as you enter the shop. To your right, where the registers were, is now the AccuQuilt department. Fabric and patterns now occupy the nook at the back of the shop where AccuQuilt used to be.

If you are a pro at quilting with Westalee rulers on your domestic sewing machine and you like to teach, I am looking for someone to teach Westalee classes here at the shop. If you are interested, please give me a call (301-527-0598) or reply to this newsletter.

On a more personal note, I am now a grandma! Alexander “Alex” Zacharkiw arrived in the world early this morning, weighing 9 lbs. 7 oz. (ouch!). Baby and parents are tired but fine.

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

UPCOMING CLASSES:

We have no classes during Quilters' Quest.  Classes resume on Monday, October 29th.

Machine Quilting for Beginners is directed at the beginner machine quilter who is unsure what to do with her hands and how to attach and use her feet. If you have put off jumping into the water or have jumped in and floundered, this class is for you. We will be using a pre-printed panel to minimize preparation time and maximize learning. The panel is large enough to allow for continued practice at home.  In the first lesson we will cover machine quilting with the walking foot, and free motion quilting in the second lesson.  Starts Monday, October 29th at 10:00am.

If you'd rather use one of the longarm machines, Getting Started: The Handi Quilter Longarm is the class for you!   You will learn the ins and outs of the longarm machine and the frame, how to set up for quilting a quilt, what proper tension is, and some basic quilting designs.  Monday, October 29th at 11:00am.

Join Jan for our next CQ Cares event:  Bears and Blankets!  We'll be making quilts to donate to kids at the Children's National Medical Institute, along with a (purchased) new small stuffed animal. Guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of a sick child! All fabric is provided, but please bring a small stuffed animal to acompany the quilt you make.  This workshop is being held on Monday, October 29th at 1:00pm.

On Tuesday, October 30th at 10:30am, learn (or polish) hand-quilting skills!  Chris Giannascoli is your guide as you learn to mark your fabric, what needles, thread, and thimbles to use, and how to do the stitches.

Sandwich Day is also on Tuesday, October 30th, with appointments available between 1:00pm and 5:00pm.

Hilary teaches Connections on Thursday, November 1st at 10:00am.  This quilt celebrates the relationships between people with its interweaving ribbons of color. Hilary, who also designed the quilt, will tell you the story behind the quilt while you sew!

On Friday, November 2 at 10:30am, join Annette for a relaxing hands-on and in-depth class on Needleturn Appliqué by hand. In the first session, you will learn how to trace your pattern, prepare your pattern shapes and the stitch. In the second session, you will learn techniques that allow you to vary the method to better suit your project and sewing pleasure. No prior applique experience is necessary.
