"There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm." Willa Cather

Dear Divine Sewists,

For those of you who have classes and club meetings this weekend, I have my eye on Hurricane Florence. If it threatens our area and we have to close the shop, I will do my best to reschedule things. If a class must be cancelled, your registration money will be refunded. As of this writing, it looks like the storm is going to head south, so perhaps our rain won’t be so bad. Check our website or Facebook page for weather-related information.

September is International Sewing Month! Throughout the month we’ll be offering special prices on a variety of items, including sewing machines and accessories, thread, furniture, and sewing tools. In addition, the event’s sponsor, the Sewing Dealers Trade Association, has prize giveaways provided by industry manufacturers, that include sewing machines, furniture, lighting, threads, sewing tools, and more. The grand prize is a $600 shopping spree right here at Capital Quilts! Come into the shop and fill out a registration ticket…no purchase necessary, do it every day if you want to!

This week we offer a 20% discount on all Janome accessories, including sewing machine feet, bobbins, and anything else labelled as a Janome product. Also take a 20% discount on non-Janome sewing machine accessories, found in the Notions department, including sewing machine needles, bobbins, feet, sewing machine oil, machine cleaning brushes, light bulbs, Magic Bobbin Genies, thread stands, needle threaders for sergers and sewing machines, and anything else that will go on your machine or help you maintain it.

HEAVENLY SEATING is back in business! We have new models for you in the shop. These are among the best sewing chairs in the industry, and they are great as desk chairs, too. The chairs adjust for seat height, back height, the angle of the back, and lumbar support. There are several options, including but not limited to about 150 different fabrics to choose from, arm rests, casters, and seat height. There is a stool option. They come with a lifetime warranty. Ask to try one next time you visit the shop!

Our fall Handi Quilter Education Event, “Quilting is a Stitch”, is this weekend on September 14 and 15. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn from Susan Manry, one of the industry’s premiere educators. She will teach two classes each day, from 10-1 and 2-5. On Friday, the morning class will focus on using rulers safely and effectively; the afternoon class explores quilting backgrounds, borders, and blocks. If you took the morning class, you’ll be able to apply what you learned about rulers to this second class. Saturday morning’s class is about Handi Quilter ProStitcher, the computer software that guides your machine as it does the quilting. Susan is a ProStitcher expert and one of the best teachers in the country; people come from afar to attend her classes! She will base her teaching on the level of knowledge among the students in the class; all levels are welcome. In the afternoon, Susan will show you what else a longarm machine can do beside quilting, such as piecing, couching, and binding. Each class is $30 and can be taken individually; you don’t have to take all four. Participants receive a 10% discount on Handi Quilter items purchased during the two days of classes. Special machine packages are also available. If you are thinking about buying a machine, these classes are a great way to try them out and learn more about them.

Register for the Handi Quilter “Quilting is a Stitch” classes online, by phone at 301-527-0598, or in the shop. SIGN UP TODAY!

Quilters’ Quest is just 5 weeks away! This 10-day long shop hop is one of the highlights of the year in our quilting community. All 10 shops have made a quilt for the event and will be giving out the patterns for their quilts for free during the Quest. You might win a daily prize at any of the shops as well as have fun doing a Scavenger Hunt. Visit all 10 shops and get your passport stamped; the last shop you visit will enter your name in a drawing for lots of big prizes, including a Featherweight sewing machine, boxes of fat quarters, Aurifil thread, and much more. Visit www.quiltersquest.org for more information.

Let us do all the driving for you! We will take you to all 10 shops in 2 days in the
comfort of a luxury coach. A light breakfast and lunch are included. We take care of
all the paperwork (passport stamping, daily drawing tickets, etc.) while you enjoy each shop.
Those who visit all 10 shops receive a special tote bag with goodies inside. Register online, by
phone at 301-527-0598, or in person at the shop.

Scott Fortunoff is the president of a company called Jaftex, which owns FreeSpirit Fabrics, Henry Glass Fabrics, Studioe Fabrics, The Blank Quilting Corp., A.E Nathan Co., and Fabric Editions/3 Wishes. He has issued a challenge to all of us; he is calling it the “Tell Them Scott@Jaftex Sent You Challenge”. Between now and November 30th, visit as many quilt shops as you can (brick and mortar only, no online) in the USA and Canada. When you visit each shop, tell them “Scott Fortunoff From Jaftex Corporation sent you.” Create some sort of proof that you are there: a receipt, a picture of you in front of the shop holding that day’s newspaper, a post on your favorite social media site, anything that shows you were in that particular shop on that particular day. Follow and like Scott’s @jaftexpresident Facebook page. On November 30th, go to that page and in the Comments section, post the total number of shops you visited. Scott will figure out who the top 4 are and contact them to get their proof of visits made. The 4 winners each get a prize: 1st- $400, 2nd-$300, 3rd- $200, and 4th-$100, all of them credits to their favorite quilt shop. No purchase is necessary.

Go ‘n’ Piece,
Alison
