What's New at CQ 05/24/18

"I still find it quite easy to find my way into a child's imagination. We're all Peter Pan ourselves in some respects. Everybody should keep some grip on childhood, even as a grownup." Tim Curry

Dear Quilting Friends,

I am back from gallivanting at the Spring Quilt Market in Portland, OR. As always there was much to see and take in. Many of the designers are showing what I call “sherbet” colors, clear pastels. Others are graying down from the bright shades of years past. Digital prints are becoming both better and more prevalent. Everybody seems to be trying to get customers to sew faster, offering kits, laser cut kits, cutting machines and dies, and pre-cuts of all shapes and sizes; and to sew smarter, as in take classes, use up your stash, find tools that let you cut accurately and fast.

One of the intriguing new products I found is called “Barely There”, offered by Susan Emory of Swirly Girls. It is a very fine fusible, similar to Misty Fuse, but it is paper-backed. It comes in 8-1/2” x 11” sheets, has easy-release paper, and can be run through an ink-jet printer. It fuses to the back of your fabric in just 2 seconds and to your project in 6. Because it is so light, the final hand of your applique is super soft, ‘barely there’. There are 15 sheets in a package, and the package retails for $16.99. Call us if you would like to pre-order yours.

I ordered a sweet line of Peter Pan themed fabric by Sarah Jane of Michael Miller. I chatted with Sarah Jane for a while, and discovered that she is a local girl. She grew up here in Montgomery County, attended Quince Orchard High School, and her mom still lives in the area. Sarah Jane will be here for a visit during the summer; hopefully her fabric will arrive before she does!

Are you ready for a summer sewing challenge? Come to the shop this Sunday at 1pm for the kick-off to “Do You See What I See?” We’ll pick our inspirational pictures and find out the details. We have three categories with prizes in each: All Quilters, Kids Under 18, and CQ Teachers/Staff. Finished quilts are just 20” x 20”, due on July 22nd. You can do this and have a whale of a good time!

If you know someone who keeps saying, "I need to learn how to sew," please let them know about the upcoming Sew Days! On six Thursday evenings, from 6:30-9, starting on June 14, we will have classes aimed at those who want to learn how to sew. The first project is a table runner. Learn how to measure and cut fabric, sew a straight line, and do an easy mitered corner. $5 per class, pre-registration is required. Bring your own machine if you have one; use one of ours if you don’t.

Come in on Monday, May 28th, 10am-6pm for our Memorial Day Sale!  We're doing things a little differently this time around.
  • Purchase any four yards of fabric from the bolts with gold* stars on the cores, and receive one additional yard of "starred" fabric (equal or lesser in price) for FREE!  This deal also works on any of our clearance bolts of fabric.  Fabric must be cut at 1 yard or more for this deal. *Stars may also be silver, green, orange, pink, blue, or red.
  • All pre-cut fabric panels, $5 each.
  • We'll also have the tables in the classroom piled with clearance deals!
  • As always, sale prices may not be combined with other discounts or offers.
Also, I’ve put a few bolts of damaged fabric in the clearance area at $4 a yard. The damage is different on each bolt, anything from holes in the fabric, misprints, and fading, to just dirt that will probably wash out. Minimum 1 yard cut, and we will not cut around the damage. Great for things like rag baskets and cutting smaller pieces.

Go 'n' Piece,
Alison

CLASSES

There are elementary schools in our region that have what one principal calls a "vocabulary gap", where children haven't had a good start at learning. "I Spy" quilts are good for learning to pick out images by name. On Friday, 5/25 at 10:30am, help us make I Spy quilts for schools in DC, Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, and Frederick County. All fabric is provided. Please bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. Please register for this free event, so we'll know how many people to expect.

The 25th is a great day for things free! Our monthly Sit 'n' Sew starts at 5pm. Bring your machine, handwork, a new project or an old project, perhaps some food to share, or just come to talk and have fun with other quilters. Capital Quilts will provide beverages and have staffers on hand to assist you in any way they can.

Electric Quilt has been the premier quilt design software for years. Let Elyse show you all the ins and outs of EQ8 on Saturday, 5/26 at 1:30pm.

Marianne can clean and tune your Janome sewing machine on Sunday, 5/27. Make your appointment now!

Longarmers: Have you ever wanted a quick way to do real custom work, offer one-of-a-kind quilting services? Use your own designs based on the theme of your customer's quilt? Or digitize a sketch of your customer and use it on her quilt top? Or create art quilts? Become an artist with the powerful, user friendly Art and Stitch program, and join the A&S Club! Next meeting is Sunday, 5/27 at 12:30. Ask for a pro-rated registration fee when joining this club.

There is one spot left in the next Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine class on Monday, May 28, 11-2. Learn how to load, use, and love the HQ longarm machines! Taking this class gives your rental privileges on the shop’s machines. Can’t make the 28th? How about June 5 at 11am?

Need help sandwiching your quilt? Make an appointment with Carol at 3, 4, or 5 pm on Tuesday, May 29. Remember, if you are going to longarm your quilt or have someone do it for you, you do not need to sandwich it.

The first class in June is a Quilt of Valor event, 2-5 on Saturday, June 2. There are 4 seats open.
Get a jump on Christmas and make a tree skirt in Skirting Christmas on June 5, 12-5. This class will be offered again on July 24; hopefully our new holiday fabrics will have arrived by then.
