What's New at CQ 2/22/18

"Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative place where no one else has ever been." Alan Alda

Dear Fabric Lovers,

It's finally starting to feel like winter is nearly over!  I know I had my windows open Tuesday and Wednesday, and I can see bulbs starting to push up through the soil in my yard.  Time always moves forward, I guess.

Speaking of, can you believe that we've got models for second quarter classes hanging already?  Not all of them, but many classes have already been scheduled and are available for registration.  Check out Diamonds in the Sea, Woven, and Butterflies, all new classes here at CQ.  As always, we are interested in offering classes that YOU want to take!  If you are interested in a pattern or technique that you feel would be a good class, please share it with us!  We may not be able to offer it right away, but all suggestions are taken into consideration when we're planning our classes.

Next month is National Quilting Month!  How will you celebrate?

Go ‘n’ Piece,
Kat & the rest of the CQ Staff

NEW & NOTEWORTHY:

Just arrived!  The Front Porch by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda presents a delightful collection of flowers, stems, leaves, vines, and buds, mixed with a mixture of complementary geometric prints in perfect shades of pistachio green, spray blue, navy, cream, soft coral, and geranium red. The addition of text adds a touch of whimsy to the beautiful hand-drawn florals and geometric prints.  $11.99 per yard.

Crabs and oysters and lobsters, oh, my!  From Northcott, Seafood Shack by Kathy Hatch translates your love of coastal dining into seventeen delicious bolts and a panel.  Fabric, 12.50 per yard, panels are $8.50 each.

Discarded glass is transformed by Mother Nature's tumbling waves and saltwater etchings into beautiful bits of art, providing fresh inspiration for Nancy Rink's latest collection, Sea Glass from Marcus Fabrics. Nancy creates a look that is as refreshing indoors as it is on the shore, with motifs of pebbles, glass shards, mosaics, kelp, and a charming text print. Her tossed weathered floral rounds out the group of seaside prints in cool, crisp shades of aqua, sea mist and azure.  $12.50 per yard.

We're sure you'll love these sets of organizer bags from Sage & Emily.  Each set contains three sizes: 11" x 9", 9" x 7", & 7" x 5".  Transparent vinyl fronts and printed canvas backs make these bags practical for sewing supplies, cosmetics, and more!  $9.99 per set of 3.

CLASSES:

You can sign up for classes online, by phone at 301-527-0598, or in person at the shop.

Fussy Cutting for EPP: A wonderful English Paper Piecing project can be made even more fabulous by purposefully cutting themed motifs for some of the block units. This is called “fussy cutting”. Spend an hour with Kim learning how to identify where to place motifs and how to cut them out. Monday, 2/26 at 10:30am.

Don't have enough room in your house to easily sandwich a quilt? Bring your top backing batting and supplies to CQ and we will help you sandwich that quilt in no time! Make your appointment now for Sandwich Day on Tuesday, 2/27.

March 2nd offers you another chance to learn how to use the Handi Quilter longarms!  You'll discover the ins and outs of the longarm machine and the frame, how to set up for quilting a quilt, what proper tension is, and some basic quilting designs.  Join us at 6pm.

Developed in the 1700’s, Broiderie Perse is the art cutting, arranging, then appliquéing printed motifs from chintz-type fabrics. Historically, this was an economical way to transform a small piece of expensive printed chintz into a quilt top. During Helen Johnston's one day class on Saturday, 3/3 at 10:30am, you will have the opportunity to play with those special pieces of printed fabrics in your collection (or start a collection now!).

The Woven Fabric Basket is a real scrap buster!  Use a plastic needle, 1/2” wide strips of fabric, and some clothesline to weave together these handy baskets.  No sewing machine needed: great for travel!  Andrea Stevens teaches you how on Monday, 3/5 at 1pm.

Do you have someone special graduating from school this year? And do you have stacks of his or her t-shirts with school names, team names, club names, etc.? Use them to make the perfect gift for the graduate! Or maybe your spouse has favorite t-shirts that are more hole than shirt: turn them into a quilt to love. Take our 2-session T-Shirt Quilt class starting Monday, 3/5 at 6:30pm.

Showcase your favorite print in the Simply a Pleasure table runner class on Tuesday, 3/6 at 1pm. We will make the runner in class, but the pattern also has instructions for 4 placemats. This pattern makes a runner that can be elegant or whimsical depending on your choice of fabric - a great gift or a nice addition to your own home!

If the big longarms are a little intimidating, but you find you still want the ease of quilting a longarm affords, try the Simply Sixteen!  This small longarm has built-in stitch regulation. Annette teaches you how to load your quilt on the frame, thread the machine, wind and load a bobbin, establish good tension, bring up the bobbin thread, anchor and tie off threads, and do a little stitching. Friday, 3/9 at 10:30am.

As of this writing, we have one Sandwich Night appointment available on Friday, 3/9.

Do you have a Janome sewing machine that needs a little TLC?  Marianne is a Janome trained technician, and has two appointments available on Sunday, 3/11.

It’s never too late to join a club. If the club has already begun, we prorate the fee for the balance of the year. Pick a topic that interests you and come enjoy the company and the experience.
