What's New at CQ 03/17/16

Dear Quilting Friends,

We appreciate your patience as we muddle through learning a new computer system here at the shop.  Everything has changed, from the way we sign you up for classes to how we process credit cards to what our website looks like!  It has definitely been a learning experience.

The class listing for the second quarter is now available, both online and in the shop.  Please take a look; there are lots of new classes.  I’m sure you’ll find something that appeals to you!  There are classes for quilting, making garments, crafts, bags, machine embroidery and machine quilting, techniques, and so much more!  I know you can do most of these things online at home, but a class doesn’t time-out the way a computer does, and you have the pleasure of spending time with real people who enjoy the same craft you do and who are full of good stories, not to mention tips and tricks!  Few shops offer as many classes as Capital Quilts does; take advantage of them!

Ink and Arrow is a new fabric line that began arriving in stores last December.  On Saturday, April 16, Cyndi Hershey, Director of Marketing for Quilting Treasures and the inventor of this fabric, will be in the shop for a Trunk Show and to talk about how the fabric line made its journey from being an idea in her head to being fabric on your cutting table.   You’ll meet Alicia, the fabric designer, and learn how she worked with Cyndi to create the fabric.  Please join us from 1-3pm for this excellent presentation!

There are three Block-of-the-Month programs starting in April.  The first is an evening class, meeting on Thursdays from 7-9.  It is called “Journeys” and Maria Ourmanova is the designer and instructor.  Maria will supply instructions for two different quilts, one an easy one and one a hard one; don’t be afraid to sign up for this class if you are early into your quilting career!  The second is called “From the Ground Up”, and it begins on April 10.  It is an appliqued wool wall hanging from Wooly Lady, about 40” square.  Diane Heller will be leading this group.  Kits are available; please pre-order them.  The third BOM is called “The Night Before Christmas”, a quilt designed by Susan Garman.  Julie Evans made the sample hanging in the shop and will lead the group.  The quilt is a combination of piecing, applique, embroidery, and embellishment, and it is delightful to look at, full of whimsical touches, such as a little mouse in his mouse hole, snug as a bug under his little quilt.  This group has its first meeting on April 30.

Row by Row begins on June 21!  This year’s theme is Home Sweet Home.  We will continue our patriotic theme in our row; look for it on June 21! And we have not one but two license plates this year, available for sale all year long.  As you travel around the country this summer, stop in the local quilt shops for a visit and collect their pattern!

We’ll be vending at two quilt shows, both of them in June.  The first is Quilters Unlimited at the Dulles Expo Center on June 3-5.  This is usually a very large show, with lots of vendors and lots of quilts made by all the chapters of QU.  It’s a good opportunity to see what our quilting friends across the river are doing these days!

The following weekend, we’ll be in Annapolis at the high school for the Annapolis Quilt Guild show, called Quilts by the Bay.  The show happens on Saturday and Sunday.  It is smaller than QU, but the quilts are well done and impressive to view.  This show also attracts quite a few vendors.

In the meantime, come in to see all the new fabrics, the new class models, and our newly painted (or soon-to-be painted) Pantone Color of the Year feature walls.  And, The Snowy Day Challenge quilts have been hung in the hallway!  Voting starts Saturday for these beauties.

Go'n'piece,

Alison & the CQ Staff
