What's New at CQ 02/25/2016

Dear Quilting Friends,

Oh, the pains of growing and working with new systems!  We have switched over from our old register system and website to a new provider.  Your patience and understanding is much appreciated during our adjustment phase.  And, if you run into any issues either in-store or online, please let us know so that we can work towards resolving them!

Alison was smart enough to schedule her vacation to start at this time, so she'll be able to return to work to find her staff well adjusted (we hope!) to the new system.

The 2nd quarter newsletter is nearly finished; there are lots of new classes, and most of the old ones that get requested over and over. We'll get it out to you just as soon as the last few touches are put into place.

Sorry we aren't chattier, but there are software things to work out!

Go 'n' piece,

Debbie, Annie, Kat & the CQ Staff

WHAT'S NEW Peels by Smartneedle have arrived.  These colorful, coiled strips of rubber will securely hold the thread on your spools and keep it from unwinding and tangling.

Remember that Alison Glass Abacus fabric we wold you about a week or two ago?  Well, the black & white prints are ideally suited for coloring in with markers.  And special, permanent, colored fabric markers are now in stock!  Come in and see the work of art Shelby and Gail have collaborated on.

Nina has long been a fan of the self-threading needle, useful in burying threads.  But there was sometimes frustration with the thread slipping out the back.  We're hoping these new side-opening self-threaders will solve that problem.

Are there left-over scraps of beautiful fabric lying around the house because you just can’t bear to toss them out? Good! Because your love of scrap is about to serve you well as you tackle these fun, easy scrap-based quilting projects in Scraps, Inc. Volume 2.

CLASSES

Sit n Sew meets on the last Friday in February, the 26th, from 5-9. This is a free event. Bring your projects and some food to share and spend an evening with other quilters and sewists. Capital Quilts provides the beverages.

Have you seen the Gravity quilt hanging in the classroom? It is GORGEOUS. Class starts on Saturday, February 27 at 9 and meets the last Saturday of every month for five months. Kim Jalette is your teacher. Kits are available.

The next Zentangle Beginner’s Workshop meets onSaturday, March 5, from 1-3. Pat D. will get you started on a wonderful journey in creativity that you can bring to your quilting experience and other areas of your life as well.

Two Capital Quilts Cares events are happening early in March. On Saturday, March 5, help make a Quilt of Valor with Sue Moats, and on Sunday, March 6, help make quilts for the Wilkens Avenue Women’s Shelter with Billye Roberts. All fabric and the pattern will be provided (donations of fabrics are always gratefully accepted!). Just bring your sewing machine, thread, and basic sewing supplies. Both events are FREE. Please register so that we know how many to expect.

Diane Henry:  Little Projects- Big Impact is happening on Saturday, March 5 from 10-1.  It's time to take things down a thousand in size, but crank up the volume of quilting. Small pieces of specialty fabric, scarves, bandanas, or antique linens all have the potential to become beautiful pieces of quilted art. Plus, because they are small, they make great projects to practice designing and quilting ruler work, background fills, micro quilting, echo quilting, feathers, Pro-Stitcher, the sky's the limit! This is a great way to jazz up old table linens for the new year or put them to a totally new use!

New to machine quilting?  Let Annette show you the basics in Machine Quilting for the Beginner, starting Monday 3/7 at 7pm.

Greased Lightening is a bold table runner that uses 2-1/2" strips.  Cathy Sullivan guides you to completion starting Tueswday 3/8 at 1pm.

Barbara K.'s ever-popular Needles and Thread lecture takes place on March 9th at 10:30am.  If you've ever tried to figure out why your thread keeps breaking, or the reason why that metallic thread seems to hate you, this is the class for you!

Rainbow Bracelets has drawn customer eyes to it since it was first hung.  A 2-1/2" strip set and some background yardage is all you need to complete this stunner.  Oh, and Hilary's class!  Thursday, 1/10 at 10:30am.

Laurie made up the Lily Dress model, and it's delightful!  Make one for the little girl (and doll) in your life.  Friday, March 11, 10am.

Call 301-527-0598 or visit the class calendar page on our website to register for a class, or stop in and see us at the shop. If you are interested in a class, be sure to register for it at least 3 days ahead of time. We reserve the right to cancel classes that have two or less students enrolled in them 3 days before the class. The teachers, many of whom live a good distance from the shop, go through a lot of effort to create and prepare for these classes, and it is not fair to ask them to come to the shop on the day of the class if there are not enough students. If we do cancel the class, you will receive a full refund of the class fee. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

THE CAPITAL QUILTS TOTE PROGRAM The prize for the month of February is a Kona Cotton Solids Charm Square Pack in the Emily Cier Palette plus a Kaufman Remix Mini Charm Pack (2 ½” squares).

Be sure to bring your CQ Blue Bags with you when you come to shop!  Your name will be entered in both the monthly drawing for the month’s prize and the year-end drawing for a new sewing machine.

Don’t have a bag?  Buy one at the shop for just $4.99.
